September 11, 2026 | New York City

The UTokyo Community Salon, a new gathering designed to provide University of Tokyo alumni with a welcoming and informal space to meet and connect, was launched at the UTokyo New York Office. The inaugural Salon was held on September 11.
The Salon provides an opportunity for alumni from different generations and fields of expertise to connect through their shared ties to the University of Tokyo and to expand their networks. Whenever possible, the UTokyo Community Salon preparation team plans to invite guest speakers to each gathering, creating opportunities to learn, exchange ideas, and enjoy informal conversation together. Those who have recently come to the United States are especially welcome!
In future gatherings, we plan to invite not only UTokyo faculty, alumni, and other members of the UTokyo community visiting the United States from Japan, but also faculty and other members of the academic communities at Columbia University, NYU, Yale University, and other universities.
For our inaugural Salon, we were delighted to welcome Mr. Krishen Mehta, Senior Global Justice Fellow at Yale University, who spoke on the topic of “Challenges to Global Peace Today.”

Using the events of September 11, 2001, as an example, Mr. Mehta emphasized “the importance of understanding the other side of the situation” in working toward global peace. His presentation was followed by a lively question-and-answer session, and participants responded very positively, describing the talk as thought-provoking and insightful. At the post-lecture reception, attendees engaged in lively conversations over sandwiches, beer, and wine, deepening their relationships in a warm and friendly atmosphere.”
The Salon is planned as an every-other-month gathering, with future events currently scheduled for November, January, March, and mid-May. We very much look forward to seeing many of you again at one of our upcoming gatherings!
The series is organized by Satsuki-kai America and supported by the FUTI Alumni Association, FUTI International Student Association, New York Icho-kai, Icho-kai (Ichio-kai), and other University of Tokyo alumni groups.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to President Okamoto of the UTokyo New York Office, Mr. Matsuzaki, and the staff of the Office for generously providing the venue and supporting the launch of this series.
