Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine brought about a major shift in defense policy worldwide, accelerating moves to expand defense spending in many countries. Since the end of the Cold War, defense budgets had long been cut while Western defense industries underwent restructuring and consolidation; however, the recent surge in demand has created new growth opportunities for Asia's defense industries. This lecture examines the background behind the emergence of India, South Korea, and Japan as major players in the defense industry, and considers how each country's political system, economic structure, and security challenges are shaping its defense industrial policy. Drawing on the perspective of an investment analyst who has tracked these trends from an early stage, the talk will offer insight into the rapidly evolving dynamics of international security and industrial structure.
