Friends of UTokyo extends its congratulations to Professor Yuko Fujigaki on her selection as the next President of the University of Tokyo.

On September 28, 2026, the University of Tokyo announced that Professor Fujigaki had been selected as president-elect by the University President Screening & Inspection Committee. She will become the University’s 32nd President and serve a six-year term from April 1, 2027, through March 31, 2033.

A distinguished scholar in Science and Technology Studies and Scientometrics, Professor Fujigaki is a graduate of the University of Tokyo’s College of Arts and Sciences and earned both her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University. Her academic and administrative career has included service as Professor at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Executive Assistant to the President, Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Member of the Education and Research Council, and Executive Vice President.

The University of Tokyo’s official statement explaining the reasons for the selection states as follows:

“Through her experience as an Executive Vice President and Trustee, Professor Fujigaki has developed a strong awareness of the University of Tokyo’s role as a symbol and representative of the academic community. The Selection Committee determined that she possesses both the strong commitment and the ability to restore public trust in academia, drawing on her communication skills to convey science and technology—her field of expertise—to society.” https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/content/400297158.pdf
