(Includes scenario of plans to attend online courses such as MOOC)
[General criteria]
- Although details of policies are reviewed every year, the following will pertain to scholarship recipients for the academic year 2021.
- FUTI would like to remind recipients that living in the locale of the study abroad is an important part of the experience. However, local authorities’ orders must be observed.
- The effect of Covid-19 is extremely serious, and the health and safety of the scholarship recipients is of utmost importance. FUTI supports and respects the decision of the scholarship recipient regarding cancellation or change of plans of attending their planned study abroad programs.
- FUTI will keep the scholarship recipient’s best interest in mind and will make decisions most favorable to the recipient. However an increase in a scholarship amount cannot be granted for budgetary reasons.
- Should the university change its plan and move classes to virtual learning while the recipient is attending in person and living in the area, FUTI will treat the situation in the same way as attending in-person.
- If the study abroad plan is cancelled or postponed to the following year due to Covid-19, force majeure, or a personal decision of the scholarship recipient, the scholarship will be withdrawn. The scholarship cannot be transferred to the next year and reapplication will be necessary to maintain fairness. When reapplying in the next year, it would be advisable and advantageous to explain the situation in the essay portion of the application.
- If the planned expenditure changes drastically due to circumstances caused by Covid-19, force majeure, or a personal decision of the scholarship recipient, whether before receiving the scholarship fund or having partially or fully received the scholarship fund, the scholarship amount will be recalculated based on the criteria set forth below. If an amount has not been disbursed yet, then the reduction will be taken from that amount. In the case of a reduction exceeding the undisbursed amount, there may be situations where a return of funds will be requested.
- If attending a non-degree online course, regardless of being on or off location of the university, please give a description of the course content and an explanation of fees in the essay portion of the application form. Recipients of the FUTI scholarship are expected to submit at the end of their study, a report and a copy of documentation or certificate proving completion of the course.
- For situations that do not fit in any of the abovementioned scenarios, decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis through communication between FUTI and the scholarship recipient.
[FUTI Global Leadership Award]
- The scholarship will be withdrawn if there is a cancellation of the study abroad plan due to personal decisions or circumstances out of the control of the recipient.
- If the recipient decides to attend classes online while staying in their home country, the scholarship amount will be reduced to 3/4 of the original amount. However, if the total amount of scholarship funds received from FUTI and other scholarship sources exceed the expenses related to the study abroad university such as tuition, then the FUTI scholarship amount will be adjusted accordingly. FUTI requests that the scholarship recipient submit a cost calculation regardless of whether the amount exceeds or does not exceed the university-related expenses.
- If attending courses such as MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) that are comparable in level to the planned study abroad university, the same rule mentioned above will apply.
- If there is an interruption in the study abroad and the recipient returns home prematurely before the planned completion date, then a pro-rated calculation will be made to the remaining scholarship amount after the round-trip airfare is deducted. FUTI requests that this calculation be submitted by the recipient.
[Ito Foundation U.S.A.-FUTI Scholarship]
- The scholarship will be withdrawn if there is a cancellation of the study abroad plan or the entire spring semester is postponed past the summer semester due to personal decisions or circumstances out of the control of the recipient. However if the spring semester is moved to the immediate summer semester, then the scholarship will not be withdrawn.
- If the recipient decides before going abroad to attend classes online while staying in their home country, and the total amount of scholarship funds received from the Ito Foundation U.S.A.-FUTI Scholarship and other scholarship sources exceed the expenses related to the study abroad university such as tuition, then the Ito Foundation U.S.A.-FUTI Scholarship amount will be adjusted accordingly.
- If the recipient returns home prematurely before the planned completion date because of an interruption in the study abroad or classes going virtual due to uncontrollable circumstances related to Covid-19, FUTI requests that the recipient submit an explanation of the situation and any changes in expenditure. However,
- If the remaining amount from the Ito Foundation U.S.A.-FUTI Scholarship is less than 30% of the total necessary expenses as outlined at the time of application, there will be no reduction in the Scholarship amount as long as this calculation is submitted to FUTI.
- If the reduction in necessary expenses after the study plan alteration is less than 20%, there will be no reduction in the Scholarship amount as long as this calculation is submitted to FUTI.
- If the reduction in necessary expenses after the study plan alteration is more than 20% (for example, 30%), then the percentage difference (for example, 30%) will be deducted from the total Scholarship amount.
