The following is an outline describing the FUTI Scholarship aimed for students enrolled in a U.S. university and planning to attend a summer program at UTokyo. Please read the whole page carefully before applying.

The same as the application deadline. Please have your reference send a recommendation letter directly to recommendfriendsofutokyo.org. Information about your reference (name, phone, email) will be required on the FUTI application form.

A. IARU Global Summer Program (GSP) at UTokyo (the University of Tokyo)

The University of California at Berkeley, Yale University and the University of Tokyo are member universities of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), which currently include ten research universities in the world. They offer the Global Summer Program (GSP) at these member universities every summer.

Friends of UTokyo, Inc. (FUTI) provides financial support (up to $3,000 per student) to several students at U.C. Berkeley and Yale University who will participate in the GSP programs held at UTokyo (see the Roster of Recipients and the FUTI blog).

If you are a student at U.C. Berkeley or Yale University and wish to seek financial support from FUTI for attending a GSP course offered at UTokyo (the University of Tokyo) , please submit your application to us, following the instructions given below.

In order to apply for an FUTI Award, submit the following materials (1-4) by February 15, by using FUTI’s web-based online application system.

  1. Information about yourself, including your name, school and department, major field of study, and year (e.g., junior year, 2nd year graduate student).
  2. A brief essay stating the reason for attending the summer program
  3. A copy of your transcript (i.e., academic record).
  4. Your brief CV (curriculum vitae) , including your academic background, work experiences, thesis or research topics (if any), extracurricular activities, publications & reports, awards & prizes (e.g., scholarships).
    FUTI regards leadership and vitality important. Express them in your CV.
  5. The name, phone and email address of your reference, whom you have asked to write a recommendation letter. Please ask your reference well in advance to email a recommendation letter directly to recommendfriendsofutokyo.org. Please note that the application and reference letter are due on the same date.

Since we do not provide any “save” feature, be sure that you have gathered all the required information before you begin.

B.Summer Programs in UTokyo other than the IARU GSP

If you are a student enrolled in a U.S. university and plan to attend a summer program at UTokyo other than a GSP course, and wish to apply for financial support from FUTI, please contact us as soon as possible by email at awardfriendsofutokyo.org, including information about the program you plan to attend.

In order to apply for an FUTI Award, please submit the following materials (1-5) by using FUTI’s web-based online application system by the due date. The due date is February 15. If you do not hear from UTokyo about admission by this date, please contact FUTI as soon as possible. FUTI may extend the deadline to the last day of April.

  1. Information about yourself, including your name, school and department, major field of study, and year (e.g., junior year, 2nd year graduate student), and the study abroad program office of your university.
  2. Information on the summer program you plan to attend, and a copy of your application form to the program.
  3. A copy of your transcript (if not included in Document 2).
  4. Your brief CV (curriculum vitae) , including your academic background, work experiences, thesis or research topics (if any), extracurricular activities, publications & reports, awards & prizes (e.g., scholarships). Be sure to include the name, phone and email address of your reference, whom you have asked to write a recommendation letter.
