The following is an outline describing the FUTI Scholarship aimed for students enrolled in a U.S. university and planning to conduct research at UTokyo or its affiliated institution/laboratory as a summer intern. Here are some specific internship programs for students in U.S. universities. Please read the whole page carefully before applying.

A.   The University of Tokyo Research Internship (UTRIP) Program.

The School of Science at UTokyo (the University of Tokyo) offers an international exchange program called UTRIP (the University of Tokyo Research Internship Program) to international undergraduate students.  The UTRIP office at UTokyo has its own scholarship program available to about 20 international students.  In order to promote the UTRIP program for students at U.S. universities, Friends of UTokyo, Inc. (FUTI)  plans to offer several summer internship awards (up to $4,000 including a room charge) to outstanding undergraduate students who will participate in the UTRIP program.

In order to apply for an FUTI Award in conjunction with your participation for the UTRIP program:

  1. Complete and submit the UTRIP application form by the deadline that UTRIP has set.
  2. Please submit a separate application to FUTI using FUTI’s web-based online application system by February 15 if you wish to be considered for financial assistance from FUTI. Please have the following information ready:
    1. Information about yourself, including your name, school and department, major field of study, and year (e.g., junior year, 2nd year graduate student).
    2. Information about your host in UTokyo, department/laboratory, your host professor/researcher and their phone and email address.
    3. A copy of your transcript (i.e., academic record).
    4. Your brief CV (curriculum vitae) , including your academic background, work experiences, thesis or research topics (if any), extracurricular activities, publications & reports, awards & prizes (e.g., scholarships). FUTI regards leadership and vitality important. Express them in your CV.
    5. The name, phone and email address of your reference, whom you have asked to write a recommendation letter.
  3. Please also ask your reference (i.e., recommender) to email a recommendation letter directly to FUTI at recommendfriendsofutokyo.org. The deadline for the recommendation letter is also February 15.

Since our web-based application system does not provide a “save” feature, be sure that you have gathered all the required information before you begin.

B.   The University of Tokyo Summer Internship in Kashiwa (UTSIP) Program

The University of Tokyo Summer Internship in Kashiwa (UTSIP) Program is, like its name, similar to but different from the UTRIP program. UTSIP program is held at the Kashiwa campus about 30 km northeast of the Hongo Campus where UTRIP is held.

The Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) at UTokyo (the University of Tokyo) offers an international exchange program called UTSIP (the University of Tokyo Summer Internship Program) to international undergraduate students. The UTSIP office at UTokyo has its own scholarship program available to about 20 international students. In order to promote the UTSIP program for students at U.S. universities, Friends of UTokyo, Inc. (FUTI) plans to offer several summer internship awards (up to $2,000 in case of a free room) to outstanding undergraduate students who will participate in the UTSIP program.

C.  The MISTI program for MIT students

The MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) connects MIT students with universities and other organizations in the world.
Friends of UTokyo, Inc. will offer  summer internship awards to a few MIT students who plan to do their summer internships at the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) or its affiliated institutions.

In order to apply for an FUTI Award in conjunction with your participation in the MISTI program, please submit the following materials (1-4) by February 15 using FUTI’s web-based online application system.

  1. Information about yourself, including your name, school and department, major field of study, and year (e.g., junior year, 2nd year graduate student).
  2. Information about your host in UTokyo, department/laboratory, your host professor/researcher and their phone and email address.
  3. A copy of your transcript (i.e., academic record).
  4. Your brief CV (curriculum vitae) , including your academic background, work experiences, thesis or research topics (if any), extracurricular activities, publications & reports, awards & prizes (e.g., scholarships). FUTI regards leadership and vitality important. Express them in your CV.

D. Summer Program, School of Engineering, UTokyo

The School of Engineering at UTokyo (the University of Tokyo) offers an international summer internship program of 3 to 5 weeks to international undergraduate and graduate students aiming for the PhD course in the future. This internship program is offered to students in the universities in the world with intimate relationships with The School of Engineering, which includes the following U.S. universities. FUTI scholarships are offered to the students of only these U.S. universities, regardless of nationalities, if they are accepted by The School of Engineering. Please be aware of eligibility to the program set by The School of Engineering:

  • Clemson University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Princeton University
  • Rice University
  • The University of Washington
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • University of California, Los Angeles
  • Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

The Office for International Cooperation & Exchange (OICE) of the School of Engineering offers its own support program available to about 20 international students of this internship program.  In order to promote this internship program for students at the universities above, Friends of UTokyo, Inc. E.  Other Internship Programs for students at U.S. universities who plan to conduct research at UTokyo

If you are students in U.S. universities and have found a host professor/researcher at UTokyo or its affiliated institution for a summer internship, and wish to apply for an FUTI summer internship award, please send your inquiry for eligibility to awardfriendsofutokyo.org as soon as possible.

In order to apply for an FUTI Award, please submit the following materials (1-5) by using FUTI’s web-based online application system by the due date. The due date is February 15. If you do not hear from the internship program about acceptance by this date, please immediately contact FUTI at awardfriendsofutokyo.org. FUTI may extend the deadline to the last day of April.

  1. Information about yourself, including your name, school and department, major field of study, and year (e.g., junior year, 2nd year graduate student), and the study abroad program office of your university.
  2. Information about your host in UTokyo or its affiliated institution, department/laboratory, your host professor/researcher and their phone and email address.
  3. Tentative plan of your summer internship, including a research/study topic, the period, and a brief statement describing what you want to accomplish in the summer.
  4. A copy of your transcript (i.e., academic record).
  5. Your brief CV (curriculum vitae) , including your academic background, work experiences, thesis or research topics (if any), extracurricular activities, publications & reports, awards & prizes (e.g., scholarships). FUTI regards leadership and vitality important. Express them in your CV.
  6. Be sure to include the name, phone and email address of your reference, whom you have asked to write a recommendation letter.
